Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy, also known as endodontic treatment, is a highly effective way to save a tooth that has become deeply infected or damaged. At Smile South Durham, our experienced dental team provides gentle, precise root canal care designed to relieve pain and restore your oral health in a calm, comfortable setting.

When a Root Canal May Be Necessary

A root canal is recommended when the inner pulp of a tooth becomes inflamed or infected. This may happen due to:

  • Deep tooth decay
  • A cracked or fractured tooth
  • Trauma or injury
  • Repeated dental procedures on the same tooth

If left untreated, the infection can spread and lead to serious complications, including abscesses and bone loss. Common symptoms that may indicate the need for a root canal include:

  • Persistent or severe tooth pain
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums
  • A small bump or pimple on the gums

To determine whether a root canal is needed, our dentists will perform a thorough examination and take digital X-rays to assess the condition of the tooth.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Your comfort is always our top priority. During the procedure, we gently numb the area and make a small opening in the tooth to access the infected pulp. The infected tissue is removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and disinfected, and the space is sealed to prevent future infection.

Most patients receive a temporary filling after the procedure. At a follow-up visit, a permanent restoration—often a dental crown—is placed to strengthen and protect the treated tooth.

Recovery and Long-Term Care

Modern root canal treatment is far more comfortable than its reputation suggests. Patients typically experience minimal discomfort during and after the procedure. Some mild sensitivity may occur for a day or two and can be easily managed with over-the-counter medication.

With good oral hygiene and regular dental visits, a root canal–treated tooth can last for many years, often a lifetime.
