Simple Steps to Alleviate Your TMD Pain

Alleviate Your TMD Pain

According to a report from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, nearly 5% of Americans suffer from jaw pains and discomfort related to temporomandibular disorders (TMD). It is a set of 30 different issues and can cause significant discomfort, making daily tasks like eating and speaking challenging.

Although frustrating and uncomfortable some TMD issues can be mitigated with a few practical and mindful approaches.

What Is Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD)?

This occurs when the joints and muscles around the jaw become misaligned or inflamed and malfunction. This can be due to a variety of factors, including injury, arthritis, teeth grinding (bruxism), or stress. If you are facing symptoms like consistent or ongoing jaw pain, headaches, neck discomfort, clicking sounds in the jaw, and even earaches, ii might be time to investigate it further.

It’s important to consult a dentist to identify TMD and pursue the necessary treatment. However, you can try to manage mild to moderate TMD pain with the following steps.

Regular Jaw Exercises

Physical therapy exercises can improve mobility, reduce pain, and strengthen the jaw muscles. Studies show that jaw exercises, like resisted mouth opening and chin tucks, can be an effective treatment for TMD patients with disturbed jaw functions. Your dentist can check your condition to give you a customized exercise routine that can eventually lessen the stress that causes pain.

Posture Correction

Poor posture could be a surprising contributor to TMD pain, as slouching or hunching over puts additional strain on your neck and jaw muscles. This can worsen the symptoms as it creates more pressure on your joints. Keeping your back straight, shoulders relaxed, and your computer screen at eye level can help avoid straining your neck and jaw.

Jaw Support Devices and OTC Medications

For those who suffer from nighttime teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism), using a mouth guard or splint can help keep the jaw in a neutral position. Your dentist can recommend a temporary custom-fit device that is more comfortable and easy to use. Occasionally, muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatories can also aid short-term.
